IBM touts bright future of solar technology

Renewable energy is a fast growing industry, with many of the top names in technology hoping to take advantage of the lucrative market.

Eco-business reports that IBM researchers have been working on ways to improve solar energy systems. The firm's Materials Science arm has teamed up with Tokyo Ohka Kogyo, Solar Frontier and DelSolar in an effort to lower the cost of the solar hardware. The company seems to be making promising findings when it comes to increasing overall efficiency for photovoltaic (PV) solar cells.

"So far, the tests of our Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (made of readily available copper, zinc, and tin, and referred to as CZTS) thin-film devices have achieved a world-record PV solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency of 11.1 percent (10 percent better than any previous reports) for this class of semiconductors," stated report authors David Mitzi, Teodor K. Todorov, Jiang Tang, Santanu Bag, Oki Gunawan, Tayfun Gokmen, Yu Zhu and David B. Mitzi. "And it can be manufactured by simple ink-based techniques such as printing or casting" {i realize it helps eat up word count, but is there anyway to just paraphrase that or find a new quote instead? because i have absolutely no idea what that one is saying}

The post goes onto state that while the PV semiconductors were used on panels were commonly seen in solar panels in homes and even in outer space, the cost to get the crystalline almost entirely pure has proved too expensive for some company. According to the research team, the ideal efficiency rate that its looking to achieve is 15 percent, which it hope to reach in the next two years.

In another recent solar technology study, Reza Arghandeh, a doctoral candidate at the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech released a paper that focuses on ways to increase the usage of solar energy for consumers. The study, presented at the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Power 2012 Conference, revealed that with the right implementation, more homes and businesses could harness the power. Part of his focus was on controlling the flow of energy and saving resources for the certain times of the day when more energy was required.
